The first posting is devoted to a place I've never been to but has an unusual name. Devizes is in Norton County, Kansas, less than a mile from the Nebraska state line. Settlement in the area can be traced to December 1872. A cemetery was established in 1879. The town plat was filed on January 4, 1890. According to Kansas Post Offices, the post office was established March 4, 1874 with Reuben Bisbee Sr as the first postmaster. It continued operating until April 15, 1926.
In 1910 the population was 48, according to the Kansas Cyclopedia. Today there may be only a couple of people. A historical book titled simply Devizes by Charles Abernathy was published in 1982 by Bireline Publishing in Iowa. There is also a Devizes in Wiltshire County, England, which must have been what the Kansas town was named after.
