Almartha, MO

A tiny crossroads town in Ozark County, Missouri, Almartha somehow strikes my fancy. I passed through it in the early 1990s. From what I can remember it consisted then of a gas station, an abandoned building that had been the post office (evident by the faded Mr. Zip stickers on the windows) and a handful of houses. The post office had been discontinued on May 16, 1969 and had a ZIP code of 65602 before it was deleted. According to Rand McNally data, it only had 25 people in 1946 and likely never had many more after that. Presumably, it started as just a post office in 1855 and off an on until the 1969 closing date.

I don't know why but I just liked the name Almartha. I'm not sure how it got that name. A map of its location is on MapQuest.
